been a long blog time

Filed under: uncategorized — Rex @ 10:34 pm

I hate the word blog and so hate myself when in a blogable mood. however, it has been too long. I may even join the Facebook, as one can no longer fight all this plastic monitor enthralled world we walk in.

Sept US Tour was a beauty/ Lost money, but made friends. Ford Econoline proved itself to us absolutely.
we are currently in the creative process, making new songs. My new drummer Ethan Jayne manipulates a Tama Techstar like no other. I bought a Yamaha SK-15 for my birthday. There is a power in there. There are many things to do and no way to stop them form happening. Hello 2010. This is an entry which doesn’t shed light on a whole lot. Stay tuned for more concreete evidence of grand ideas.

US TOUR IN SEPT

Filed under: diary — Rex @ 11:49 pm

Mattress will finally cross the MISSISSIPPI and hit cities all over the US this Fall. With us will be a new LP on Malt DUCK Records, a new 7in from Die Stasi and a comic book. And though we all know there are enough t-shirts in the world, we will have a tshirt soon. why fight it?

skyscraper reviews Heavy Duty

Filed under: uncategorized — Rex @ 6:52 pm

Skyscraper magazine review

File under: “I didn’t see that coming!” I am not normally at a loss for words nor am I surprised by much of what I have heard during my years spent on this big blue planet but Mattress caught me completely unaware. After a bit of legwork, it is beginning to make sense. Mattress, a vehicle for the boom-box backed street poet and performance artist Rex Marshall, plays a minimal sound of beats, dark melodies, and elecro-mess, all the while crooning in a dead-from-the-neck-down voice. It is a peculiar mix but one that I am sure will attract more than repel listeners, if given half a chance. Somehow, I imagine Mattress’ music making more sense live-whether on a ..Portland.. footbridge or in a ….Montreal…. basketball court, as can be seen in available videos kicking around the cybersphere-but it works well on record too. Marshall’s voice is not an easy meal to digest (think Nick cave, Tindersticks’ Stuart Staples, Alan Vega, or Stephen Merritt, on nitrous) and Heavy Duty is for brave souls with iron-clad stomachs willing to withstand a slightly abrasive meal of stock beats, organ, rough guitar, and that unmistakable voice. It may be the same song and dance over and over, but it is a wildly interesting song and dance nonetheless. (David Nadelle)

hooray for PDX pop festival

Filed under: uncategorized — Rex @ 12:27 am

hey, that felt good, i mean, for sure, that was the crowd and good times i needed.

words from LocalCut writer M Mannheimer…..about PDX Pop Festival 2008

I mentioned this in my share of the LocalCut staff preview, but you really need to experience Mattress live. Anyone doubting the whole one-man-band shtick will seriously lose their mind at just how intense and dead on this guy is. Every song is a torch song, eclipsing its predecessor in intensity before he grabs a harmonica to wail into his mic during penultimate number “El Dorado.” This guy makes writing about music so easy.

live footage coming round

Filed under: diary — Rex @ 7:53 pm

hello all, this is the first real entry. There are videos coming out from Canada, things live, things blurry both in sight and sound but nonetheless something to click if you want.
one from Toronto, outside in a basketball court, 11pm, police came round 12:15. You can hear them singing along if you strain your ear.
